What a comparison checks
Fifteen rows, grouped into seven themes. Every row shows both sites' numbers and says, in plain English, why the better one wins it.
Status & response
The better site is the one currently classified as operational rather than blocked, timing out, or down. 2xx and 3xx responses are healthy; 4xx, 5xx, and no-response results create visitor and crawler risk.
Speed
Four timings tell the story: DNS lookup, TCP connection, time to first byte, and full load. Lower is better because visitors wait less; the performance guide explains each leg.
SSL/TLS
A valid certificate with more expiry headroom is safer and less likely to break unexpectedly.
Security headers
Six recommended headers are counted per site. More means stronger browser-side protection by default.
Redirects & page weight
Fewer redirects reduce latency and remove avoidable failure points. Smaller HTML usually reaches users faster and leaves less work before rendering begins.
Compression & caching
Compression cuts transfer size, especially for text-heavy pages, and a clearer cache policy helps repeat visitors reuse content safely.
Search basics
A canonical tag reduces duplicate-URL ambiguity, pages without a noindex directive are easier to include in search, and a real title improves tabs, sharing, and snippets. More in the SEO guide.
How the verdict is scored
Each row is scored per site, then weighted: speed and current status count double, cosmetic rows count less. Tolerances stop trivial differences (a few milliseconds, a few kilobytes) deciding a row, and the verdict sentence sums the weighted wins up in plain English.

Can I compare my site against a competitor?
Yes, that is the point. Paste your URL and theirs. Both sites are fetched once, checked on identical public signals, and scored row by row, so the comparison is as fair as we can make it.
Why did the site with the faster TTFB lose overall?
Because speed is only part of the score. A site that answers quickly but is missing security headers, serves an expiring certificate, or blocks indexing can still lose to a slightly slower site that gets the fundamentals right. Rows are weighted, and speed rows carry tolerances so trivial differences don't decide a winner.
What do the SSL and security checks look at?
Whether each certificate is valid and how much expiry headroom it has, plus how many of six recommended security headers each site sends. More headers means stronger browser-side protection by default.
Do you store the results?
No. A comparison fetches both pages once, shows you the verdict, and keeps nothing. If you want the same comparison tracked over time, save the sites to a free account and watch the trends instead.
